The character and personality of plants. Our intimate connection with plants—whether in the landscape, garden, greenhouse, home or studio. Composition and technical proficiency. Artistry—in terms of personal expression, photographic technique and creativity. These were my guideposts when selecting photographs for awards and inclusion in the two galleries. The competition was fierce—especially for the awards. Each image in the gallery show stands out in a special way. Those selected for awards stood out in every way.

Our Juror’s Award recipient, Jacqui Turner, offers an intimate view of a plant with a unique personality and fluffy seeds ready to be dispersed by the wind. Not only do we learn about this protea, we are treated to an artistic interpretation, beautifully executed. The Director’s Award goes to Mary Whalen for the simple, yet expressive arrangement of old-fashioned flowers, interpreted in an appropriately vintage way. The curving stems and densely-packed petals of ranunculus convey the spirit of this early springtime favorite.

The quality and diversity of submissions for this year’s Botanical exhibition was outstanding. I could have easily created a third gallery of beautiful and intriguing images. I thank everyone who shared their work. It has been a delight spending time with your favorite botanical photographs.
